Lack of support helps kill off youth group; LEADER SAYS OTHER GROUPS BASED AT BOYS' CLUB ARE NOT AFFECTED BY DECISION.
Byline: STEVE EVANSA YOUTH group which has served north Warwickshire's largest village for three decades has closed.
Organisers have blamed a lack of volunteers for the closure of the youth group based at Bulkington Boys' Club in Barnacle Lane. Other groups there are not affected.
The group's committee says it has been forced to pull the plug on health and safety grounds. The last session was last week.
Club spokesman Vaughan Heath said: "The number of committee members and youth club leaders has been steadily dwindling over a number of years.
"Despite repeated appeals for help, a very limited response has been forthcoming.
"The stance by the committee has not been taken lightly but the current situation cannot continue."
The club has regularly catered for girls and boys from the age of seven, every Tuesday evening for 2 hours from 6.30pm.
It has provided facilities for sports and games, music, and even a "chill- out" area.
Mr Heath said: "If the club is to reopen, at least five or six members are required for the committee or to help out at the youth club for a few hours a week."
He stressed the closure of the youth section would not affect other clubs and societies currently using the venue "at least for the foreseeable future."
In 1998 more than pounds 40,000 was raised to build a hard-court sports area at the club.
