CELEBRATION TIME FOR THE BRUNNIE; Memorial Day at the Royal Liverpool.

THERE won't be the massive crowds lining the fairways' there won't be the same excitement generated by the world's best at The Open, but Royal Liverpool will be staging an event in September regarded by many as extra special.
The fifth Michael Marshall Memorial Golf Day offers teams the chance to tread the same fairways as the golfing greats.
The result, not in terms of who wins but how much money is raised, will be the most important aspect - for the proceeds will benefit Brunswick Youth Clubin Bootle.
Marshall, who died in 2001, was a founder member of the club, from the seed of an idea planted whe was a prisoner in the Second World War.His links as a member of the Royal Liver pool Golf Club stretched from 1937 to 2001.
The youth club has generated a terrific amount of interest in the local community down the years with thousands of youngsters benefiting from the various activities provided.
One of its famous members is Liverpool star Jamie Carragher who still maintains an interest in the "Brunnie's" support for youth, and has generously offered many of his footballing souvenirs for auction to help raise funds.
"The club offers sports and teaching facilities for technical skill development," said Tim Marshall, Michael's son.
"It also encourages two other important aspects - the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and links with overseas youth groups. Indoor facilities include a large sports hall and we offer dance and arts."
Tim explained that his father and two other Liverpool officers, Philip Evans and Harry Moun-sey along with many others in Oflag 79, hit upon the idea that when they returned home from Germany they would endeavour to provide facilities to help develop Britain's youth by establishing boys clubs.
The Bootle club - the other still in existence is in Fulham - was established originally in premises in Bedford Street South in 1947, but moved to Marsh Lane in 1964. It boasts 500 members, aged between 9-16, and now has a mixed member ship.
Said Tim, a city solicitor whose father took his final law exams while a prisoner, continued: "Jamie was a member in the early nineties and his dad was also a member. He has been very supportive and he was at the club in January when he was given the Freedom of Sefton."
The golf day, sponsored by Northwestern Shiprepairers Limited, is on September 29. Already 17 teams are taking part, but there are still vacancies for a few more.
"Last year, we raised pounds 11,000 from the golf day and you are al ways looking to exceed what you raised the previous year," stated Tim. "A lot depends on the auction."
He has served on the commit tee of the youth club, but now is part of the group who organises the golf day. "My father was captain at Hoylake in 1960 and I am chairman of the council of the club, which supports certain charities and I am glad to say this is one of them.
"Bob King is coming to speak at the dinner after the tournament. He will talk about life in the prisoner of war camp," Tim added.
