NOTEWORTHY.
Byline: The Register-GuardCarson countdown: The first big U.S. meet that doesn't have "relays" in the title takes place Sunday in Carson, Calif. The list of adidas Track Classic entries includes Nick Symmonds of Oregon Track Club Elite in the 1,500 meters, moving up from his usual 800 to face a field that includes Bernard Lagat. Former Oregon hurdler Eric Mitchum is entered in the 110s. Three OTC Elite athletes are listed as entries in the 800; they are Kevin Elliott, Brandon Shaw and Elliott Blount. Galen Rupp, entered in the 3,000, is questionable with some soreness in his shins, said coach Alberto Salazar, who will make a final decision later in the week. The meet will be televised live on ESPN from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Awesome Oliver: There are many good high hurdlers in the United States, but no one is running better now than David Oliver, whose 12.95 time in Doha tied for ninth on the all-time world list. Oliver, the U.S. Indoors champion this year, was ranked No. 9 in the world last year by Track & Field News, so he hasn't come out of nowhere. Astute Oregon fans will remember the former Howard University star as the athlete who ended Eric Mitchum's winning streak in high hurdles races at Hayward Field - Mitchum had been 11-for-11 at home in his UO career - by winning in the Oregon Invitational in 2006.
