From the editor's desk.
In communicating with various members of the Center's executive and advisory boards at our last conference, we were reminiscing on the many fine conferences that the Center has hosted in its 14 years. The Center's first conference addressed quantum mechanics. At this 1987 conference, The Frontiers of the Philosophy of Quantum Theory, we brought together leading physicists, mathematicians, and philosophers to discuss this all-important topic. Having such key scientists as the late David Bohm, Yakir Aharonov, Robert Cohen, Avshalom Elitzur, Joseph Margolis, Roger Penrose, Fritz Popp, and Lev Vaidman among its participants to discuss new directions of quantum mechanics made this conference without question brilliant. (1) You may say this conference was the energy force that fueled this Center in its mission to serve as the open forum for the frontier issues of science, medicine, and technology. So why do I bring this to your attention? It is the fact that the conference and the various articles that have appeared throughout this past decade in Frontier Perspectives, as well as those present in this issue, reflect on quantum mechanics and its overall impact on science.The work of William Tiller, Walter Dibble, and Michael Kohane so well relate to this in their paper, Exploring Robust Interactions Between Human Intention and Inanimate/Animate Systems, Part II: Theoretical, where they show that two allowable windows of opportunity exist in the present physics paradigm, whereby subtle energies (vacuum energies) might meaningfully influence physical reality.
Judah Tzoref's paper, New Aspects of Vacuum Kinematics, is a follow-up to his first paper where he presented the hypothesis of vacuum kinematics, discussed the principles and postulates of the hypothesis, and provided mathematical examples of known phenomena interpreted in terms of vacuum kinematics. In this paper, further physical aspects are interpreted in terms of vacuum kinematics.
Our news and views segment has some interesting articles, such as Michael Lieber's paper, Force and Genomic Change, where he addresses the force and genomic change in cell structure and conveys that a truly unified field theory in physics may very well be found through an investigation of the deeper, dynamical basis of adaptively responsive mutagenesis.
Yoshihiko Saito and Kunio Yasue present us with a paper, Pedagogic Demonstration of Spontaneously Broken Symmetry by Magnetic Compasses, where they address one of the most important concepts in modern physics-spontaneously broken symmetry (SBS). In their paper they point out that the mechanisms of SBS were first demonstrated theoretically in quantum field theory.
Marian Wnuk and Casimir Bernard in their article, The Electromagnetic Nature of Life--The Contribution of W. Sedlak to the Understanding of the Essence of Life, attempt to present the more important ideas regarding Sedlak's concepts on the electromagnetic nature of life. Sedlak describes "Life" as a process, quantum in nature, expressing an electromagnetic coupling of chemical reactions with electronic processes on a protein-nucleic semiconducting substrate. Sedlak's view that life as well as consciousness is electromagnetic in nature is delivered in this paper.
As you review these articles and reflect on their relationship to quantum mechanics, it brings to light the issues that have been raised and the questions that must be addressed. It shows that advancements have come about and an exciting future lies ahead. Such advancements have played a critical role in medicine, particularly energy medicine, and they show that the scientific world is moving forward in solving many of the frontier issues that puzzled scientists in the 20th Century. The Center for Frontier Sciences stands proud in knowing that through its networking efforts it contributes to this progress and hopes to secure funding to support future conferences that will address quantum mechanics and its role in the advancement of science, medicine, and technology.
