THE owner of a death trap hotel was last night said to be about to give himself up to police.

William Genato has not been seen since 70 people died and more than 50 were seriously injured as fire swept through the pounds 4-a-night building near the Philippines capital of Manila early yesterday.

Many were seen screaming behind barred windows. The bodies were taken to a makeshift morgue in a basketball court at a nearby police camp. Officials say the fire was caused by faulty wiring in the restaurant. Genato was said to have been told repeatedly to put in fire escapes, fire alarms and emergency lights.
