Orwell himself is not unsung, of course, says Saunders (Liverpool Hope U., Britain): his political and satirical novels and non-fiction books are as popular as ever. It is his novels from the 1930s that are now forgotten, she argues, and should be admired for their literary artistry, perhaps more apparent without the glare of controversial politics to distract readers and critics. She does not so much review the individual novels as use them to demonstrate such aspects as his political aesthetic, narrative perspectives, portrayal of women, and unique style.
