Television: TERRESTRIAL PICK OF THE DAY.

Coronation Street ITV, 7.30pm and 8.30pm THE interweaving of plotlines and family affairs in Corrie is making EastEnders look like Sunset Beach, but without the laughs.

ITV's flagship soap is so far ahead of its BBC rival these days it is almost embarrassing and tonight's double header is another example of its class.

Tommy takes matters into his own hands and decides to do something about Martin's affair, while Sunita is in trouble.

In the second episode, Sally turns the tables on Ian and Angela does everything she can to chill out the raging Tommy.

Wire in the Blood ITV, 9.00pm THIS is one of the superior cop show dramas on UK television at the moment and a new series is always welcome.

It's creepy, gritty and pretty full-on all the time, and has a darker edge which most of its rivals can't get close to.

Robson Green returns as the Cracker-type forensic psychologist Tony Hill who tonight has to track down a vicious child killer.

Hermione Norris co-stars again as another fine thriller is guaranteed.

Comedy Connections BBC1, 11.05pm THIS series examines the roots of the best-loved comedy acts of all time and starts at the top, with the very best - the Pythons.

The main players all discuss the classic troupe's influences, style and impact and show links through The Frost Report to Monty Python via various sixties satire shows and radio classic The Goon Show. Anything with these guys on it has to deserve a look in.

ER Channel 4, 10.00pm A TRUE shadow of its former self, this US hospital drama is more of a commentary on modern TV standards by the fact it is still one of the best things on the box, even though it has little drive, purpose or cohesive plotlines.

It maintains good ratings because it has an excellent ensemble of characters.

Abby, Kovac, Pratt and Carter may be unable to lead the show, but are all excellent supporting staff and very watchable. Tonight, Sam and new lover Luka try to help a rape victim speak to cops, while Weaver criticises new ER boss Susan.

Joey Five, 11.05pmTHE first two episodes of the series failed to live up to the pre-match hype but any decent sitcom always needs time to get warmed up.

It's also worth giving ex-Friends star Matt LeBlanc and the excellent cast another shot.

Still having trouble coming to terms with his new life and his struggling career again, Joey feels Friend-less and sister Gina helps him organise a party to meet new people.

Around the World in 80 Treasures BBC2, 9.00pm IF you cross Indiana Jones with Michael Palin you will either get a wise-cracking pensionable archaeologist, or this new travelogue series.

Presenter Dan Cruickshank will spend the next 10 weeks travelling the earth in search of 80 treasured objects, from Peru to Brazil, the Middle East and back again.

HOW YOU DOIN'?: Former Friends star Matt LeBlanc is struggling with his new career in Joey, Five, 11.05pm. Dan Cruickshank is travelling from Peru to Brazil in the fascinating Around The World In 80 Treasures, BBC2, 9pm.
