Teenagers killed in motorway smash.

Byline: By Liz Hands

Tributes last night marked the scene of a crash in which two teenagers were killed and another was seriously injured when their car ploughed into a lorry.

The two men, both 18, died when their car collided with a lorry parked in a lay-by on the southbound carriageway of the A1 in Newcastle.

A third 18-year-old man is critical in Newcastle General Hospital after the smash near the A69 slip road on the Western Bypass at about 9pm on Friday.

Yesterday, flowers and messages were left at the spot where the two died.

One said: "To Jonna, you were my world. Now, you've been taken away. I'll miss you forever, think of you everyday. Love you always. Carly."

Another said: "To Jonna and Lee. Miss you loads, love Dean" and a third said: "To Jonna and Lee, never forget you, Sandy."

Northumbria Police yesterday said they were not yet in a position to release the mens' full names until their families had been informed.

They are now appealing for witnesses who may have seen the accident. A force spokesman said yesterday: "At the moment, we are trying to get more information as to what exactly happened. The car was on the A1 and, for reasons to be established, swerved to its nearside.

"Traffic officers and paramedics attended the scene. However, two 18-year-old male occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene.

"A third male 18-year-old occupant was taken to Newcastle General Hospital where his condition remains critical.

"As a result of the incident the A1 was closed for over three hours.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

The connection between the lorry and its trailer was being changed at the time of the accident, but the lorry driver escaped injury. The road was re-opened at 12.40am on Saturday.
