It might not be as well known as some other attractions in the nation's capital, but the Sweetgrass Aboriginal Bistro in Ottawa has been providing a unique dining experience since it opened its doors in November of 2003. The restaurant is owned and operated by Phoebe Sutherland, who is Cree, and her husband Warren, who is of Jamaican descent. Though both Sutherlands served as chefs at the restaurant for a number of years, all the cooking is now handled by Warren while Phoebe tends to the front of the bistro. The restaurant's seasonal lunch and dinner menus offer plenty of sumptuous Aboriginal cuisine. Two of the most popular items are the Powwow Trail Indian Taco and the seasoned bison burger. Other favourites include the wild boar, rabbit risotto and grilled tatonka (buffalo rib-eye steak). The patrons' Aboriginal experience is enhanced as taped Aboriginal music plays throughout the bistro and Native art adorns the walls. Also, Native art and jewellery can be purchased at the bistro. Though not required, reservations are recommended for the bistro, located in the city's Byward Market, one of Canada's oldest and best-known public markets.
