Schools boss secret.

The bureaucrat behind school league tables for Scotland admits he was a dunce at sums.

Douglas Osler yesterday unveiled the controversial figures, then confessed: "Numbers weren't my strong point."

The tables, based on exam results, showed a huge gulf between cash-strapped state schools and private ones.

But privately-educated Mr Osler, the senior chief inspector of schools, needed a resit to get his OWN sums right as a youngster.

At a launch for the tables, claimed to lead to a more open education system, he was reluctant to talk about his own school report. But he did say that he got five Highers at Edinburgh's private Royal High School in 1960 - English, Latin, Greek, History and French.

He added: "I won't tell you about the one that's not there."

When asked if he failed his Arithmetic, he replied: "I might have."

The top civil servant then admitted he only passed the Lower Arithmetic test, the equivalent of today's Standard Grade, at the SECOND attempt.

SURELY SUM MISTAKE
