Open a can, sign a player!

Town could be handed a pounds 250,000 transfer kitty through "the best sports' promotion ever seen in the UK".

For 80 days from tomorrow, 200m cans of Coca-Cola will offer fans a daily chance to text or register online confirming their favourite Football League club.

The innovative scheme will eventually produce a single winning fan, to be confirmed during the Coca-Cola Championship play-off final in Cardiff on May 30.

That fan's club will then be handed the cash to spend on players.

"This is the best sports' sponsorship we have ever seen by any sponsor," said Chris Haynes, head of Sky Sports publicity.

Having ploughed pounds 15m into a three-year title sponsorship of the Football League, Coca-Cola are clearly intent on maximising their investment.

However, this should not detract from the `win a player' scheme, which could hand a cash-strapped club a transfer budget they would otherwise never have dreamed of.

To put the sum into context, of the 385 transfers that have taken place so far this season, only 18 have exceeded pounds 250,000.
