Middlesbrough restaurant 'requires urgent improvement' after being given zero food hygiene rating; The restaurant was given the lowest possible hygiene rating following an inspection in August.

A Turkish restaurant in central Middlesbrough has been slapped with a zero food hygiene rating.

Efe's Turkish Restaurant on Middlesbrough's Linthorpe Road was given the lowest possible food hygiene rating after a recent inspection on August 4 from the Food Standards Agency. The safety officer who carried out the inspection stated that the restaurant required 'urgent improvement' across multiple sectors including food handling and cleanliness.

After last month's inspection gave Efe's the lowest possible hygiene rating, the restaurant now requires major improvement amongst multiple sectors in order to meet the standard's set by the Food Standards Agency's inspectors.

In August's inspection, the Food Standards Agency rated Efe's on three different sectors: hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building as well as management of food safety. Hygienic food handling includes preparation and cooking of food, cleanliness and condition of facilities includes proper ventilation, hand washing and pest control.

Management of food safety highlights systems or checks which are in place to ensure that food sold or served is sae to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety and the food the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.

Overall, the food safety officer stated that 'urgent improvement is necessary' in order for Efe's to meet their standards. The restaurant currently has 17 reviews on TripAdvisor, with 15 of them 'Excellent' and 2 'very good'.

Teesside Live contacted Efe's regarding their zero food hygiene rating, but they declined to comment.
