MPs pressed on duty.
Byline: Howard WrightLADBROKES boss Chris Bell and Betting Office Licensees' Association director-general Tom Kelly have again pressed MPs on the case for making no deductions from punters' bets, writes Howard Wright.
They met members of the All Party Racing and Bloodstock Committee, including joint chairman Richard Page and Labour's Llin Golding, in the House of Commons on Tuesday to discuss betting duty. They also pointed out that the issue could ultimately be determined by horseracing interests.
BOLA chairman Bell said yesterday: "The tone of the committee has undoubtedly changed from the last time we met them. They were very receptive, not hostile.
"We took time to explain the benefits of a gross profits tax which, if set at the right rate, would deliver nil deductions for punters.
"But we also pointed out that particular consideration will have to be given to what sort of charge racing will make for providing its product to the betting industry. That, too, has to be right to enable a zero
deduction."
