MACCA: OWEN WILL JOIN ME ABROAD.
FORMER Liverpool winger Steve McManaman believes Michael Owen will walk away from Anfield when his new four-year deal runs out.McManaman, who quit Merseyside for Real Madrid when his contract expired in the summer of 1999, feels Owen was right to stay with the Reds for now.
Owen this week agreed a new four-year deal with the Reds, believed to be worth pounds 60,000 a week.
But McManaman insists the 21-year-old England striker will eventually join him on the Continent.
McManaman said: "Michael's new contract was the best he could have done. But I don't think he will fulfil his promise of staying at Liverpool the rest of his career.
"I think he will leave Anfield just before 2006, when he will be 26, so this may be the last contract he signs for Liverpool.
"He will have been at the club for 11 years and that is enough to learn his trade."
But McManaman believes it may be too late for Owen's Reds teammate Robbie Fowler to make a successful move abroad. Fowler is now 26 and struggling to claim first team place at Anfield. McManaman said: "It's too late for Robbie to change his style, but not for Michael."
