In keeping with the theme of this issue, let it be noted that Los
Angeles's professional women's basketball team, the LA Sparks
(sister team to the Lakers), staged one of their major season kick-off
events last May at the lesbian nightclub Girl Bar, reputed to be the
largest such establishment in the country. The West Hollywood event
acknowledged what for years has been conspicuously ignored: that
lesbians comprise a major share of the Sparks' fans on any given
home-game night. Girl Bar is also offering special Sparks/Girl Bar
premiere ticket packages to its 12,000 members and promoting the Sparks
in other ways. This marks the first time a major-league sports team has
officially teamed up with a gay organization and marketed openly to the
gay community.
