Kaldoun put down at 25.
KALDOUN, who emerged from relative obscurity to be one of the most successful stallions in France, has been put down at the age of 25 at Haras d'Etreham, writes Janet Hickman.The grey was no more than a useful runner in France, where he was a Listed winner and placed in several Group 3 races at around a mile.
But he was given a chance at stud and progressed during the late 1980s and 1990s from bargain-basement sire to become one of the best stallion sons of Caro, who has also been responsible for Cozzene and With Approval in the US and Crystal Palace, Nebos, Rusticaro and Sharrood in Europe.
Kaldoun's offspring include top-level winners La Koumia (Gamely Handicap), Mercalle (Prix du Cadran), Occupandiste (Prix de la Foret, Prix Maurice de Gheest), See You Soon
(Ramona Handicap) and Spadoun (Criterium de Saint-Cloud), plus around 40 other stakes winners, nearly all of them in France.
Several of his sons have been standing in France, among them Balleroy, Cardoun, Kadounor, Kaldounevees, Kadrou and Simon du Desert. He is also broodmare sire of Fabulous La Fouine (out of Mercalle), who finished second to Singspiel in the 1996 Japan Cup.
