Hani stars in Oman victory.
MUSCAT: Oman Handball Association (OHA) chairman Said bin Salim Al Busaidy described it as the "best match" of the Asian Beach Handball Championship. But it was a clear stunner as host Oman stunned defending champions Pakistan 2-0 (18-14, 16-13) in front of a large audience at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex yesterday. "This is a great achievement for us and it will certainly boost our boys to perform further," said Al Busaidy speaking to reporters after the match.
Though Pakistan team stood out completely in what was a stiff contest between the two sides, it was Omani players who were the best performers. Oman forward Hani Al Dughaishi was the leading scorer with 18 points. "He is a great performer and the way he played was outstanding," said a delighted coach Hamood Al Hassani.
"If you look at the points out of 34 he scored 18 so that shows the talent of this player," he noted. Oman will face Qatar today who in their opening game defeated Kuwait 2-0 (14-12, 16-14). According to Hassani, Qatar will be a hard team to beat but has expressed confidence in his team.
"Looking at their performance against Kuwait they (Qatar) need a special mention," he said. Hassan added that the camp in Hungary has given the team a booster. "It certainly helped us and we had a clear plan set before this championship," he added.
