Hanes family history.
My third great-grandfather, Joseph Hanes, (Hain, Hen, Haynes, Haines), was born on the 10th of September 1726 in the Palatine. The Palatine (Pfalz in German) is a district in the south-west region of present-day Germany, between Luxembourg and Bavaria. As was the case in much of Europe for decades, the Palatine had been the scene of political strife and religious persecution. Joseph emigrated around mid-century. He and his wife, Catharina (nee Cryderman), were able to enjoy freedom of worship in the Lutheran Church. From 1767 to 1773 they rented a farm at Livingston Manor on the Hudson River south of Albany, paying rent of thirty bushels of wheat and four hens annually. Their first child, Michael, was born in 1755, followed by Christopher in 1758, George, Eva in 1761 and Catherina in 1767. Their last child, John (my ancestor), was born in 1770.
In 1773 the family moved to Johnstown in the Mohawk Valley where they rented 100 acres for six pounds per annum from Sir William Johnson. In 1776 the peace Joseph had sought came to an abrupt end. Joseph's three eldest sons became members of the King's Royal Regiment of New York. Sergeant Michael Hanes and Privates George and Christopher belonged to Captain Stephen Watt's company, a group of specialized sharp-shooters, who were present at a number of engagements including the Battle of Oriskany. It is here that Joseph said "his son George was killed." Joseph used his blacksmith skills in support of the regiment.

Joseph, at age 55, had remained in Johnstown. According to his Petition to the British Government, he was arrested on 23 April 1781 and placed in "gaol' for aiding the Tories. Later released back to the farm, but fearing arrest again, he and his family, Catherina and the three youngest children, fled to Montreal where they are listed on the Provision List for 1784.
In return for their service to the Crown, the family was given land in the Lutheran Township of Williamsburg in Dundas County. Catherina died sometime before 1799 and Joseph passed away in January 1802.
In 1812, when the Americans decided they could annex Canada, Michael and John were members of the Dundas Militia. Michael was a captain and John enrolled as a private.
On 11 November 1813 John's home and farm buildings were severely damaged. His farm was, in fact, located virtually in the middle of the site of the Battle of Crysler's Farm. (The battle plan was laid out on the evening of November 10th in Crysler's Farm but was fought primarily on the adjacent Hanes and Fetterly Farms.) After the battle his home was turned into a hospital for eighteen days.

John and his wife, Anna Bush, sold their farm on the St. Lawrence River in 1818. They moved just north of Chesterville. The uneasy peace that followed the War of 1812 may have been one reason for the move. John died on 28 February 1856 and is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Chesterville. Anna is believed to be buried in the North Lunenburg Cemetery.
John Jr., my second great grandfather, lived until 1888. His wife, Elizabeth Schwerdfeger, was born on 12 July 1798 and died on 14 May 1859. John followed a number of their children to the Huntsville area. He died on 18 May 1888 and is buried in Stephenson Cemetery, Utterson, Ontario.
