HOWARD MILLER ACQUIRES RIDGEWAY.
Byline: Nancy MeyerZEELAND, Mich.-Howard Miller, the leading manufacturer of grandfather clocks, purchased the assets of Ridgeway Clocks from Pulaski Furniture for an undisclosed sum. Both companies are privately held.
Ridgeway, a major brand in the better clock business, manufactures floor clocks, accent clocks, better wall clocks and better mantel clocks at its plant in Ridgeway, Va., which employs between 100 and 150 people.
"We bought it because it was an excellent brand name and an excellent company," said Philip D. Miller, chairman of the board of Howard Miller. "It will be run separately from Howard Miller," and keep its present manufacturing, management team and sales force under the Ridgeway Furniture Co. name, he said.
Synergies between the two include possible joint sourcing and development of movements, Miller said, but the brands, marketing, sales and manufacturing will be kept separate.
Howard Miller, which has a "history of acquisitions," also keeps its wood furniture (Hekman Furniture) and upholstery (Woodmark Furniture) units separate, Miller said.
Pulaski, a major maker of bedroom, dining room, curio and accent furniture, bought Ridgeway Clocks from Gravely Furniture Co. in 1985.
