Byline: RICHARD GRAYMALE seals living around our coasts have developed Scottish accents in a bid to attract more females.
Scientists found the loveable sea mammals have their own unique dialects depending on where they live.
Underwater growls used by males to attract females in Scotland are quite different from seals in other parts of the world. Researchers at Aberdeen University discovered the accents while evesdropping on "conversations" between seals.
Dr Paul Thompson, who headed the research group, said: "A major aim for male seals is to be heard by as many females as possible."
