Byline: Phil McNultyIT seems ironic that Philip McNulty's column is subtitled: ``Giving it to you straight'' because whatever `it' is, it is certainly not the truth.
When my son (Robbie Fowler, right) was transferred to Leeds , he left with no recriminations, receiving welcome calls from Messrs Houllier and Thompson wishing him good luck.
He and I were deeply saddened at the move but felt that he had no option in the furtherance of his career; particularly as the World Cup approached.
I feel compelled to respond to the scurrilous inaccuracies in last Friday's edition: 1. ``Fowler failed to deliver for Houllier and was packed off toLeeds United.'' Clearly Mr McNulty chooses to ignore the fact that talks were offered to extend his career not curtail it.
2. ``Where nothing has happened to suggest he (the manager) was wrong.''
With 14 goals last season (four for Liverpool) he was Leeds' top scorer. This season he has been recovering from a hip operation.
This latter comment would be laughable if it did not come from someone who claimed `to have always supported Robbie Fowler'. That kind of support he is better off without.
Anger and disappointment are two words which spring readily to mind. It is distressing for a father to read of his son beingthe subject, yet again, of reckless media coverage - even as an aside.
Was ``the Chief Football Writer for BBC Sports Online'' so short of intelligent copy that he chose to fill up space with defamatory comments?
I have only contempt for your scribe. Robert, at least, has tried to move on with his life.
