BUNDESLIGA favourites Bayern Munich failed to find a winning start in their pursuit of an 18th title.They could manage only a goalless draw with Borussia Moenchengladbach and coach Ottmar Hitzfeld played down talk of this being the club's best- ever side in the making.
He said: "People are talking about this becoming the best Bayern team of them all but we'll have to wait until the end of the season before we know."
Indeed Bayern had a disputed decision to thank for taking a point after Borussia new boy Joris van Hout had a first half `goal' chalked off to the dismay of the 34,500 home support.
After the break the visitors took control though and Michael Ballack, Ze Roberto and Hasan Salihamidzic all went close to stealing it for Bayern.
Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen had also to make do with a point during their trip to face Cottbus with coach Klaus Toppmoeller pointing out his players had only three weeks to prepare after the bulk of his stars returned late from the World Cup.
He said: "We played some great football considering we had so little time."
Bochum celebrated their return to the big time with a 3-1 win over Nuremberg and the only other opening day victory went to Schalke who robbed Wolfsburg 1- 0 with a last-minute winner.
Kaiserslautern had to rely on a late equaliser from Miroslav Klose to salvage a 1- 1 draw with Stuttgart.
