WESTBURY Homes has been given the go-ahead to build new apartments at Waterfront Barry.

Planning permission has been granted by the Vale of Glamorgan Council for the new development, which will be named David's Wharf, after David Davies, the man behind the creation of Barry Docks.

This will be the fifth major residential housing phase at Waterfront Barry - one of the UK's most successful regeneration schemes - and the second Westbury development in the area.

David's Wharf, upon whichwork will start soon and cost some pounds 12m, will include contemporary-style apartments.

Byron Lewis, project manager at Waterfront Barry, said, ``The new development will build on the success of Waterfront Barry as a top quality site for economic and community growth, which also demonstrates Westbury's continuing commitment to the regeneration of the vibrant waterfront area.''

Waterfront Barry is increasingly being seen as an up-and-coming place to live and shop - the location, waterside views, amenities and exciting future are some of the factors attracting property buyers and reinforcing the buoyancy of the South Wales market.

David Mills, managing director of Westbury Homes, said, ``One year ago we completed our first development at Waterfront Barry - David's Lock - which was an enormous success. Now we're back and pleased we have the go-ahead for the latest phase of housing for this prime location which is right on the waterfront.'' Next month, Waterfront Barry will see an exciting community event take place when the newly named Enterprise Quay, which lies alongside the Waterfront Park, will provide a berth for a spectacular Tall Ship Stavros S Niarchos as part of the Waterfront Festival at Barry.

Waterfront Barry is a joint initiative formed by Associated British Ports (ABP) and the Welsh Development Agency who are undertaking a multi-million pound land regeneration programme on 77 hectares (190 acres) of land next to the Number One Dock.

ABP is using its property development company Grosvenor Waterside to manage the project which is regarded as a prime example of the type of partnership between public and private sectors that forms the key to sustainable development.

THE David's Wharf development will see a pounds 12m investment in apartments.

It is the latest Westbury scheme to be built in the successful Waterfront Barry area, a joint initiative formed between Associated British Ports and the Welsh Development Agency.

Some 190 acres in size, it is transforming a former docks area into a vibrant waterfront mix of residential and commercial developments.
