Cash aid for girls' footy.
A girls' football team is to benefit from a New Year cash boost.Sunderland Junior club FC Stannington is celebrating as Sunderland South MP Chris Mullin hands over a pounds 5,290 cheque to develop more sport opportunities for local girls.
Mr Mullin was being joined by players and club officials at a team training session this afternoon at the Sandhill Centre, Grindon Lane, Thorney Close, Sunderland.
He will present the cash on behalf of the Football Foundation sports charity. The award will allow the club to develop the girls' section, organising "taster days" to attract more members.
FC Stannington Stars and Saints both compete in the newly-formed Russell Foster Girls League on Saturday mornings.
After 12 games played, the Stars are currently joint top and the Saints closely behind them in third place in the Under 10s' Girls' league.
Mr Mullin said today: "It's great news that football in Sunderland is opening up to girls as well as boys. Why should boys have all the fun? Many thanks should go to the Football Foundation for this generous grant."
Mark Wrightson, the girls' teams manager, added: "All those connected to the club are very grateful to the Football Foundation for its contribution to the development of girls' football".
