Lending more

Alliance & Leicester today revealed mortgage lending remained strong during the first six months of 2003.

The group said it continued to see growth in the home loans market with almost half its first half lending going to homeowners remortgaging instead of buying new homes.

The trend helped A&L beat expectations to unveil half year pre-tax profits of pounds 262m - up 12pc.

Clean break

HOME shopping group Kleeneze today offloaded its loss-making display marketing business DMG for just over one eighth of what it paid for it less than three years ago.

DMG - which was recently renamed The Wonderful Book Company - was sold to Premier Direct for pounds 4.1m, a fraction of the pounds 31.5m Kleeneze paid for the business in November 2000.

Building up

A NEW organisation, Rethinking Construction North East has been established in the region to give innovations a showcase and spread best practice in the sector.
