Bunkers Bistro, Dwygyfylchi; TASTE TEST.
Byline: Iolo GriffithsAS my wife's birthday was coming up, and we had a friend coming over to stay with us, we thought it might be a good idea to go and try out the Bunker's Bistro, specifically the lunchtime special deal. It was a new place for all of us.
On a fine summer's day, one of the very few which we have had this year, we went there, and found a small car park just in front of the Bistro itself, and two fairly long lay-bys just across the road, so there was no shortage of parking.
TESTS 5 We went up two flights of stairs to get to the dining area, but noticed that there were stairlifts, useful for those with difficulties walking. PAST On arrival the waitress showed us to the table we had reserved, and gave PIER HOUSE, great views across quality food (01248 811055) MALA'S BISTRO, excellent food us the menus to read.
There was a good choice of nononsense traditional main courses, and at prices we considered to be very reasonable.
One would have to be very hard to please not to find at least something to tempt them. buds(01407 763331, CON AMICI, ample choice, (01745 814444, EAST, LLANDUDNOOriental food (01492 868555) PATISSERIE CHESTERgo eat cake, (01244 343286, co.uk) My wife chose the beef lasagne, I opted for the gammon with egg and chips, and our friend went for the cod and chips. When the waitress had taken our orders we were able to contemplate the scenery and chat while we waited.
The panoramic sea view from the restaurant window, stretching from Puffin Island to the nearby heather-clad hillside at the foot of the Sychnant Pass, was itself sufficient reason to make a visit to the Bunkers Bistro.
We did not have to wait too long before our meals arrived, all of them accompanied by a generous side-dish of chips, and a salad consisting of lettuce, tomato and cucumber. The chips were really crispy.
My wife was pleased with her lasagne, which came in a fairly large bowl. My gammon was a good-sized piece, done to exactly the right degree with an egg on top, and our friend thought her battered fish was just right.
None of us had any complaints. Besides this there was another side dish to share between us with vegetables - carrots, broccoli and green beans.
The bistro's menu proudly claims it uses as many fresh products as possible, and we certainly found no reason to doubt these claims.
After we had all polished off our main courses, it was time to consider the desserts options.
Again there was a good choice, but we did manage to make up our minds.
My wife and our friend both went for the peach and pineapple crumble, while I, to be different, chose the profiteroles with cream.
We felt that we had exactly the right level of service. The waitress was friendly and gave us advice as needed and asked if we wanted any sauces, but we certainly did not feel that she was hovering over us.
The crumbles came with a choice of custard or ice cream, and both my companions had chosen ice cream. They said that the crumble was of the right degree of sweetness.
My profiteroles came in a sundae dish on top of the thick cream, with chocolate sauce on top. It looked delicious and tasted as good as it looked.
After the desserts were finished, we could have chilled out on some comfortable seats, with a coffee, and there was a well-stocked bookcase.
Anybody who fancied a leisurely sit-around would have been in their element.
However, instead of staying around, after we paid, we chose to travel home by way of the picturesque Sychnant Pass, which made a fitting sequel to an enjoyable meal.
