Byline: Fred Crafts The Register-GuardTwo groups will explore the distant edges of jazz in visits to Eugene this weekend.
Matt Jorgensen +451 will play music from their new CD, "Hope," at 9 p.m. today at Luna, 30 E. Broadway.
Led by drummer Jorgensen, the Seattle quintet - with Mark Taylor and Rob Davis on saxophones, Ryan Burns on Fender Rhodes and Phil Sparks on bass - won the 2003 Golden Ear Award for Northwest acoustic jazz group of the year from the critics and readers of Earshot Jazz Magazine.
The group's 2002 release, "Quiet Silence," on Origin Records, rose to No. 39 on the JazzWeek national airplay chart and received several `best of 2002' mentions.

The genre-bending Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey will perform at 9 p.m. Saturday at the McDonald Theatre Lounge, 1010 Willamette St.
The Tulsa, Okla., band - Brian Haas (guitar, melodica and acoustic piano), Jason Smart (drums) and Reed Mathis (bass) - shows influences ranging from John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk to Jimi Hendrix and KRS-One.
Together since 1994, the group has been doing more than 200 live appearances per year. It has collaborated with Les Claypool, Charlie Hunter, Karl Denson, DJ Logic, John Scofield, Critters Buggin' and the Slip.
