Shea Foster opened Baby Views in Little Rock to offer expectant parents the ability to see their unborn child in a new way: "4-D" pictures.
"It is like 3-D, but the fourth 'D' is time," Foster explained. "With the addition of time, you get a moving real-time picture."
Foster has more than 14 years of obstetric ultrasound experience as a registered diagnostic medical sonographer. She started her own business so she could continue working in the field while setting her own work hours.
"My kids got tired of me never being able to do things because of my work hours," Foster said. Now, her business is located near her children's school and she works by appointment only--although she will make appointments for Saturday mornings and some evenings.
Because she provides an elective service and a referral by a doctor is not required, Foster does not accept any type of insurance.
"I am one of the few places in the state that has the ability to provide the 4-D picture," Foster said. "UAMS has one of these machines, and just a handful of other places in the state."
Going into the 4-D ultrasound business was not cheap.
"My biggest expense when starting the business was the purchase of the 4-D technology," Foster said. "The machine needed to provide the real-time images cost $130,000."
After years of working in the field of ultrasound, Foster has not tired of what she does. She said the new technology amazes her as much as it does expectant parents.
"You can watch as the baby rolls over, opens its mouth and makes different facial expressions," Foster said. "I could sit and watch it all day long."
