BOLA's Racing Channel fears.
A CONFLICT has emerged between SIS and the Betting Office Licensees' Association over plans to promote the sale of the Racing Channel to pubs and clubs.SIS, keen to extend the market for its specialist channel, has proposed supplying the Racing Channel at a charge of pounds 100 per month, compared with the existing rate of pounds 300. But BOLA is concerned that the initiative will encourage illegal betting. John Morgan, who has since resigned as SIS chairman, presented the case for expansion at BOLA's council meeting last month but failed to reassure opponents. BOLA has now written to SIS urging it to reconsider its plans.
Tom Kelly, BOLA's director general, said: "We think it is dangerous for the bookmaking industry to cut the fee to pounds 100 a month. We have consistently taken the view that illegal betting will be encouraged by the spread of live television coverage in pubs and clubs."
This has long been a sensitive subject within the bookmaking industry. BOLA believes that illegal betting is a bigger problem than is officially acknowledged, and that it is likely to expand as the number of betting shops contracts.
