Aherne abdicates from Royle throne.

ROYLE Family creator Caroline Aherne, who quit Britain for Australia earlier this year, has penned a new sitcom for the BBC.

Aherne, 37, who left the UK in June saying she wanted to take a year out of showbusiness, will also direct the sixpart family based comedy, which will be set Down Under.

The show, called Dossa and Joe, will feature popular Neighbours star Anne Charleston, who played Madge, and Aussie actor John Caton, who appeared in The Castle.

BBC2 is said to be on the point of signing a deal with Aherne, after the channel's controller Jane Root visited the star in Sydney to discuss the project, which is expected to hit the screens next year.

Earlier this year Aherne, who had fought a long battle with alcohol addiction, admitted attempting suicide.

She shocked the showbiz world in June when she quit Britain to set up home in Australia.

The Royle Family and Fast Show star said she no longer wanted to appear on television because of the pressure and simply wanted to take a year out.
