Acrobats and pirates make a big splash at the Barry Waterfront Festival.
Byline: Peter CollinsVISITORS to the Barry WaterfrontFestival joined pirates and watched in wonder as the night sky was lit up by a spectacular pyrotechnic display.
The popular annual festival, which attracts thousands of people to the town every September, was this year the climax of the first Barry Summer Season, which began on July 3. The festival and the season werehailedasuccess,attracting additional visitors to the town and building on its fame as the home of BBC hit sitcom Gavin and Stacey.
Rain dampened the fun on the final day of the festival yesterday.
But clear skies and a warm breeze the previous evening meant the Cirque Bijou show was a huge success.
The night sky over the Waterfront was lit up as the performers combined acrobatics and dance with stunning pyrotechnic effects.
TheminesweeperHMSRamsey formed the backdrop to the performance which ended with an impressive fireworks show.
Among the other attractions were a 50ft inflatable whale, courtesy of Circo Rum Ba Ba.
Children were invited to enter the belly of the whale where they were entertained by theatre performances based on a pirate theme.
Across the road, the Sully Pirates, a gang of at least 30 salty sea dogs, re-enacted village life and exploring the history of Barry Island back when it was a pirate stronghold.
Mike Chubb, who is events officer attheVale ofGlamorgan Council, said: "The Waterfront Festival has become a firm fixture in the council's summer events programme, proving more popular year on year.
"It was an exciting weekend andwasasplendidwaytofinish off Barry's first Summer Season."
