Byline: By AIDAN McGURRAN

THIS amazing image just a millionth of a millimetre across shows that if small is beautiful microscopic is.. mindblowing.

The picture of freeze dried water droplets called liposomes won top prize in a competition run by the UK Micro and Nanotechnology Network.

More than 44 images, some of the tiniest seen, were submitted by scientists using powerful microscopes. Each was a nanometre, 80,000 times narrower than a hair.

Second prize shows a layer of chemical and the third magnetic fields by nanotubes of carbon.

Judge Alan Smith said: "Nanotechnology will bring big breakthroughs."
