National Unsigned Band Search Propels Music Career
for Darwin's Waiting Room
Musicland Stores Corporation announced today that Sam Goody's Bandemonium 1999 winner, Darwin's Waiting Room, has signed a recording contract with MCA Records. Bandemonium is Sam Goody's annual search for the best unsigned band in the country.
"Winning Bandemonium was huge for us. It was our first professional step into the music industry," said JaBe, lead singer for Darwin's Waiting Room.
Darwin's Waiting Room won the Bandemonium crown in March 1999. The Miami band outperformed more than 350 other bands around the United States for the title of the best unsigned band in the country. With the victory, they won $2,000, Gibson musical equipment, and studio time with producer Jim Wirt (Incubus, Sprung Monkey) to assist in the development of a demo tape.
"The demo allowed us to expand our listening audience," said JaBe. "It also gave us a product to attract the attention of record labels, managers and other people in the industry."
MCA Records executives were impressed by what they heard.
"Darwin's Waiting Room is an amazing, amazing band," said Hans Haedelt, senior director at MCA Records. "They have worked very hard to get where they are. They have secured the exposure they deserve by successfully creating and developing a great music scene in a city where it's difficult for bands to make a splash."
Stephanie Maki, director of partnership marketing and national promotions at Musicland, said, "Musicland has always been committed to supporting new music, and Bandemonium is one of the ways we try to help musicians succeed in this very difficult business. We are excited that we could provide Darwin's Waiting Room with some of the critical exposure it needed to reach this milestone and we're honored that Bandemonium could be a stepping stone for the members' music careers."
Recently, Musicland Stores Corporation has made significant strides with Sam Goody's Bandemonium including the signing of Darwin's Waiting Room. "Bandemonium now extends past its annual Spring Break contest roots. We have enhanced the overall program to include an in-store developing artist program that we support year round," said Maki. "The success of Darwin's Waiting Room is a perfect example of the opportunity that Bandemonium delivers."
In-store displays include information on how to enter the annual competition. Information about the call-to-entry for the Bandemonium 2001 will be released later this month.
Bandemonium is a multi-faceted program designed to discover and promote new musical talent and to build the Sam Goody brand among influential young adults across the country. It is comprised of an in-store marketing program incorporating displays in all Sam Goody stores that feature local talent as well as signed, breaking artists. In addition, the "event" component involves a national band competition for unsigned bands, culminating in a Spring Break grand finale.
