Industrial-Strength Web Server Software Supports Java(TM), JavaScript(TM) and Advanced Features for Publishing Live Online Content

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Netscape Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: NSCP) today announced Netscape Enterprise Server(TM) 2.0, industrial-strength Web server software with advanced features for publishing live content on corporate networks -- or Intranets -- and the Internet. Along with Netscape FastTrack Server announced separately today, Netscape Enterprise Server is the first Web server to support the Java(TM) and JavaScript(TM) programming languages, enabling the creation, delivery and management of live online applications. It also provides rich document creation and management capabilities as well as next-generation Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) security features.

Netscape Enterprise Server is the cornerstone of Netscape SuiteSpot(TM), Netscape's new suite of integrated Internet server software products for Intranets. Netscape Enterprise Server combines Netscape's next-generation high performance server architecture with enhanced security and network management features, providing a complete solution for customers who want to leverage standards-based Internet technology for internal communication, collaboration and data access. Pricing starts at US$995.

"Since releasing our first Web servers more than a year ago, our many corporate customers have asked for a variety of enhancements and advanced features to help them create and manage live applications and documents on Intranets," said Mike Homer, vice president of marketing at Netscape. "Netscape Enterprise Server 2.0 delivers features that meet and exceed these requirements, while extending functionality well beyond just Web publishing capabilities."

Since December 1994 when Netscape released its first generation Web servers, corporate customers have deployed Netscape servers to provide employees with access to the resources and information available on internal networks and the Internet. According to research estimates from Morgan Stanley & Co., Inc., the market for Web servers is expected to grow from 100,000 servers in 1995 to 2.2 million by 1998. Servers for use in Intranets are expected to be the fastest growing segment, and Netscape Enterprise Server is designed to meet the requirements of this market.

To facilitate the creation and management of Intranet content, Netscape Enterprise Server includes Netscape LiveWire integrated visual development environment and Netscape Navigator Gold(TM) 2.0 client software. Netscape Navigator Gold 2.0 combines all of the features of Netscape Navigator(TM) 2.0 with easy-to-use personal Internet publishing capabilities, making it easy for people of all Internet skill levels to create online documents. Netscape LiveWire provides visual site management, hyperlink integrity management and database connectivity to Informix, Oracle, Sybase, Illustra, CA-OpenIngres, Microsoft SQL Server and ODBC compatible databases. The combination forms a powerful development environment for combining multimedia content, application logic and database access for creating complete online applications.

Netscape Enterprise Server also supports Java and JavaScript, which enables users to build applications that run on either the client or server anywhere on the network. This support enables developers to create content applications that can run on multiple platforms without recompiling. In addition to Java and JavaScript, Netscape Enterprise Server also provides a comprehensive set of open application programming interfaces to simplify application creation and customization.

Netscape Enterprise Server is built on a next-generation high-performance architecture, delivering performance that significantly exceeds that of existing Web servers.

Additional content management features of the new server include:

* Integrated Verity(TM) Topic search engine technology to enable the development of content and applications that include powerful search and retrieval functionality. The Verity technology provides Netscape Enterprise Server users with sophisticated full-text search facilities such as multiple collections, incremental indexing of HTML, SGML, and ASCII documents, add-on support for free PDF, and a variety of search mechanisms including boolean, wildcard, phrase, free text and sentence queries

* MKS(TM) Integrity Engine 1.0 software, a comprehensive document control solution that lets users easily and automatically keep track of multiple revisions of their documents

* One-button content publishing and HTML document conversion support through Netscape Navigator Gold 2.0

* Read/write document level access control

* Automatic document cataloging in conjunction with the new Netscape Catalog Server(TM) software.

Netscape Enterprise Server's new network management features include:

* Transparent multiple domain support

* Improvements to easy network administration via Netscape Navigator

* Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) versions 1 and 2 support for standards-based, remote monitoring capabilities

* Configuration rollback which lets administrators easily rollback configuration changes to earlier versions.

Netscape Enterprise Server also offers advanced security features including the SSL 3.0 open protocol, which provides client-side certificate authentication and advanced Internet-ready access control. This feature enables MIS managers to restrict user access to mission-critical enterprise information and resources based on a combination of user name and location. The administrative security features in Netscape Enterprise Server also enable MIS managers to control users, groups, IP addresses, certificates and domain name access down to the document level.

Netscape Enterprise Server is expected to be available in the second quarter of 1996 from Netscape and its authorized resellers. The software is also expected to be available for downloading from the Netscape Internet site for free 90-day evaluation later this month. Netscape Enterprise Server with Netscape LiveWire and Netscape Navigator Gold 2.0 is US$995. Netscape Enterprise Server with Netscape LiveWire Pro, which includes a run-time and developer version of the Informix Online Workgroup database, is US$1,495.
