LOCAL ATHLETICS: Anderson avoids obstacle to glory; Hurdling successes as McGlory takes 5k.
Byline: PHIL THOMASSOUTHPORT'S Robert Anderson and Charlotte Buckingham each won gold medals at the Blackpool Open Meeting, with Anderson taking the 75m hurdles and Buckingham the 70m hurdles events.
Other Sandgrounders' gold medal successes included Sam Moran in the shot and hammer.
The seaside club were also in action at the Swinton Half Marathon, Rob Bowker taking 10th place in 79 mins 39 secs after coming straight off night shift and Christine Cutner breaking the journey by taking her daughter to University in Leeds to start the race at 8. 30 am and finish 108. 44 later.
The club lies fifth in the Central Lancashire Grand Prix with the women's team up to fourth. The final event in the series is the Larry Hyland 10k on October 3.

Oxford University student Courtney Birch (LPS) won the gold medal at the World Junior Women's Biathlon Championships in Bavaria. The silver medal went to club-mate Maria Barrett.
Phil McGlory won the final Wavertree 5k, defeating Hywel Care (York Acorn). Sarah Jackson was the first female home ahead of Susan Cain (Penny Lane Striders).
McGlory was also the fastest runner in the Liverpool Corporate Cup recording 15. 19 as he finished four seconds ahead of Tim Dickinson. Former London Marathon silver medal list Gerry Helme recorded 18. 02 running for Range High School.
St Helens-Sutton have added to their senior ranks, Dennis Wharton joining from St Helens Striders and Gill Bacon from Wigan Phoenix. Bacon ran the fastest time at the club's Ken Crouch Memorial 3000m held at Sutton last week but it was Christine Dickinson who came up with the trophy win on handicap.
Wirral AC, Liverpool, Liverpool Pembroke-Sefton, St Helens-Sutton and Southport Waterloo have entered teams in the Merseyside Road Relay Championship at Birchwood this weekend.
LPS have entered teams in the under 13 girls, senior ladies and senior men's races while Wirral have only entered teams in the boys and seniors races. Liverpool and Southport Waterloo contest all events while St Helens-Sutton compete in every race, except the U17 girls.
The largest number is in the men's team which has attracted 18 entries from the four clubs. The race is part of the larger North West Championship, which sees 65 teams toeing the line.
The big talking point is the absence of Warrington AC's youngsters.
The first race in the 2004/5 Merseyside Schools Cross Country League for Girls takes place on October 2 at Calderstones Park. Details of school and individual entries are available from Stacey O'Donnell, 34 Snowden Lane, Lockfields, Liverpool L5 9RA.
