Conde Nast reunites mag and web site with purchase of Wired News.

Lycos, Inc. (Waltham, MA), a subsidiary of Daum Communications Corp. (Seoul) and an operator of community and technology lifestyle web sites, has sold Wired News (wired.com) to Conde Nast Publications, a division of Advance Publications (New York), for $25 million.

Wired News provides daily information, news and features on the impact of technology, science and the Internet on business, politics, culture and lifestyle. It is also the online home of "Wired Magazine," a title owned by Conde Nast. Lycos acquired Wired News as part of the Wired Digital acquisition in June 1999. The current deal includes the sale of Wired.com and Wired News assets only and excludes the Hotbot, Hotwired and Webmonkey sites.

Steve Newhouse, chairman of Advance's Advance.Net web division said that "we are thrilled to be bringing Wired News back into the fold after eight years of separation from the print publication, especially since it comes at a time of exploding growth and creativity on the web, and huge momentum for 'Wired Magazine.'" Conde Nast's initial investment in the magazine, a minority stake, was made in January 1994. The title was launched in January 1993 and targeted to "creators, managers and professionals" in the business information, design, entertainment, education, media and related information industries.
