It was initially thought that Lynsay Jackson may have had a heart attack.
But following toxicology tests, her death certificate was updated to show the 35-year-old was killed by an overdose of propranolol.
The drug, a beta blocker, is widely prescribed for various ailments, including heart and circulatory conditions, high blood pressure and tremors.
It is also used to treat symptoms of anxiety, migraines, hyperthyroidism and glaucoma.
Coulthard and his family were heartbroken when Lynsay was found dead at her home in Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire, in the early hours of the morning in February last year.
The mum, whose daughter Emily was just 10 months old, had gone to bed complaining of stomach pains the night before.
She was found dead by her husband Will, an environmental health officer.
An initial entry on the General Registrar for Scotland, in Edinburgh, listed the nurse's cause of death as "unascertained, awaiting laboratory results."
It has now been updated on the official records.
Propranolol was one of various prescription drugs found on Clueless star Brittany Murphy's bedside table after she died in Los Angeles in 2009.
Yesterday, experts said propranolol was usually safe. Former GP Richard Simpson, now Scottish Labour's public health spokesman, said: "You need to make sure the dose is suitable for the individual."
