pounds 1.3m AMO GETS TO PAY FINE AT A WEEK; Court stunned by JP's ruling.

Byline: BRIAN McCARTNEY

MILLIONAIRE footballer Lorenzo Amoruso was yesterday told he could pay a speeding fine at just pounds 25 a week.

Rangers' Italian defender was fined pounds 260 at Perth District Court and, to the amazement of onlookers, Justice of the Peace Neil Muir gave him almost three months to pay.

Amoruso, who did not appear in court, is understood to earn pounds 1.3million a year, or pounds 25,000 a week, at Ibrox. He was also given four points on his driving licence for doing 92mph on the notorious A9.

By contrast, widowed Iris Gibson, 63, from Glasgow, who was also caught in a police speed trap on the road, yesterday agreed to pay her pounds 100 fine immediately, despite living on a pension.

Amoruso was caught near Auchterarder, Perthshire, during a clampdown on speeding prompted by more than a dozen deaths on the road this year.

The 30-year-old was on his way to meet friends for a shooting trip when he was stopped.

The star, who was driving a Rangers- registered pounds 16,000 Honda HRV, which has a top speed of 120mph, admitted speeding in a letter to the court last month.

He said he had been guilty of a "lapse of concentration".

The former Fiorentina star said he had not noticed his speed rising as he drove towards Perth from his home in Bearsden, near Glasgow.

In his letter to the court, Amoruso said: "This was a serious lapse of concentration for which I am very sorry.

"I have been in Scotland for five years and this is the first time something like this has happened."

The player added that he could not reveal how much he earned. He wrote: "I am unable, for contractual reasons connected to my profession, to complete the information about means, but I understand this to be optional in any case."

After the case, Mr Muir, a JP of several years' standing and full-time postman, declined to give his reasons for allowing Amoruso time to pay.
