GERRY McCANN has spoken of his agony on the second anniversary of his daughter Madeleine's disappearance.

The doctor returned to the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz for the first time to film a reconstruction for a TV documentary.

He said: "We are a family and we're a happy family but we're not a complete family.

"There's still a scar, a deep, deep scar that's kind of knitted at the minute, but you still think it might break or come loose, the stitches of it." The Channel 4 documentary features Glasgow-born Gerry, wife Kate and their young twins at home in Rothley, Leicestershire.

Kate said: "I think we're far from normality. We need to get it out there that she's alive, she's out there."

Madeleine disappeared from the family's room at the Ocean Club complex two years ago today.

A picture has been released of Madeleine as she might look now, created by an American forensic imaging artist.

Private detectives Dave Edgar and Arthur Cowley, hired by the McCanns, tell Cutting Edge that they believe someone living locally knows what happened to her.

The former police officers say one statement corroborates the sighting by a friend of Madeleine's parents of a man carrying a small girl at the time she went missing. The search team also found statements from tourists, who noticed a suspicious-looking man hanging around near the apartment on that evening.

Edgar, a retired detective inspector with more than 30 years' experience, is leading the probe.

He said: " Someone local has the answer to this. It's a very self- contained resort and that's where I think the answer is."

And he added: " In my experience, random just doesn't happen, someone just doesn't go in, a passer- by, and pick up a child and take it. These things are planned."
