THE RICHEST PLACE IN SCOTLAND; Stars' village tops list.
A COMMUTER village has been named the richest place to live in Scotland.One in six residents of Thorntonhall, on the southern outskirts of Glasgow, are millionaires according to a study.
The village, near East Kilbride, is littered with super-rich footballers, TV stars and businessmen and has now been become the 11th most popular location for the rich across the UK.
The village beat competition from other plush estates in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen to become the top millionaires' row in Scotland.
The lavish housing estate boasts a host of stars such as Celtic footballing hero Chris Sutton and TV comedy personalities Fred MacAulay and Andy Cameron.
A staggering 15 per cent of those who live in the Thorntonhall postal district are millionaires, according to the survey by market researchers Experian.It is believed the village has attracted a new breed of the very rich - self-made people who want to live away from the hustle and bustle of the city centres but still need access to their jobs.
Researchers studied shareholder registers, databases of company directors and credit records to establish which area was the leading millionaires' row.
The sought-after suburb of Cults, in Aberdeen, which houses many of the country's oil executives, was second.
Milltimber, in Aberdeen, came third - with Albert Drive, in the south side of Glasgow, and Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, claiming the number four and five spots.
Edinburgh's Murrayfield and Queen's Road in Aberdeen were also in the the top 10, as was Newton Mearns, near Glasgow.
But Thorntonhall came out most popular with the rich.
Many of the homes have wrought iron gates with video security entrances and guard dogs.
Top-of-the-range executive cars litter the driveways and double and triple garages are common.
Property prices have steadily increased over the years, with three to four- bedroom properties selling for between pounds 300,000 and pounds 500,000 - and often more.
One Thorntonhall resident last night said she liked living there because it was an ideal location to bring up children and from which to commute to work.
The woman, who did not want to be named, said: "It is a close-knit community and although nothing much happens, if it does, then everyone knows about it."
