Jamil Mahfouz Award for short stories and story collections announced.
Aleppo, northern Syria (SANA) -- The Aleppo Directorate of Culture on Tuesday announced launching the Jamil Mahfouz Award for short stories and story collections for 2011.Participants in the short story category must be below 40 years old, and the story must not have participated in other contests and is no less than 4 pages and no more than 10.
The first prize is SYP 15,000, while the second and third place prizes are 12,000 and 10,000 respectively.
The story collection category is open to all age groups, and the participating works must be unpublished manuscripts that have not participated in other contest and is no less than 60 pages long.
The first prize is SYP 100,000, and the second and third place prizes are 100,000 and 60,000.
The contest is open to all Syrian writers and Arab writers living in Syria.
Competing works must be written in classical Arabic and must conform to moral and national standards.
The works will be evaluated by a panel and the results will be announced during an award ceremony held in July.
The contest will be held on biannual basis.
Jamil Mafhouz was born in Aleppo in 1914.
He received a doctorate in pedagogy and psychology from Sorbonne University in Paris in 1945.
He is considered a pioneer in the field of education in Arab countries, and has written many books in this field in Arabic and French.
He passed away on 11/7/1985.
