HONDURAS DENIES ISLANDS FOR SALE.
A series of Internet-fueled rumors has prompted the President of Honduras to deny its Swan Islands are for sale, reports PA News (May 4, 2002):Rumors were sparked by an Internet sales pitch launched by resort promoters. The false reports claimed the company's legal representative was a relative of President Ricardo Maduro. The Web site said the small islands would be converted into "The Ultimate Fantasy Resort," with elaborate, themed hotel complexes clustered around an airport runway. Realistic drawings showed tourists strolling through a "Venice-style" capital city called Cygnet. "There will be no automobiles, the transportation will be by electric golf cart. The islands are part of Honduras, but will be governed independently" and will have no income or property taxes, said the Web site;
"I am quite surprised by what this Internet site said, because it is owned by the Honduran government," President Maduro said. "Honduras has no current plans for tourism development at Swan Islands, nor are they being offered for sale." In a telephone interview, the promoters' Honduran lawyer, Felipe Danzilo, acknowledged that the plan to develop the islands was still in a very early stage. "We were told we would have to do a number of studies before it was even considered," he said.
