Football: FUTURE'S LOOKING BRIGHT; Scotland 2 Poland 0.

Byline: By EWING GRAHAME

WALTER SMITH'S first match in charge brought the feelgood factor back to the Future team.

Gary McDonald of Kilmarnock and Dundee United striker Lee Miller got the goals which gave the hosts a comfortable victory.

The Scots had lost to Austria and Germany in the four-team league - they play Turkey on March 10 - and they certainly took this game to the opposition.

Sheffield United midfielder Nick Montgomery forced a fine early one-handed save from Lukasz Fabianski with a raking drive from 25 yards.

McDonald had the ball in the net in the 14th minute but both he and Killie team-mate Kris Boyd were offside.

Two minutes later the Poles almost netted when Adam Virgo turned a cross against the post.

Gary Teale had a chance from a Barry Robson cross but the Wigan wide man snatched at the shot.

Fabianski turned a 20-yarder from McDonald behind, but the midfield man made sure right afterwards, heading home from Teale's corner.

Three minutes after the break the Scots doubled their lead when a Teale effort ricocheted kindly for half-time sub Lee Miller and he dinked it over the keeper.

It was a competitive affair and Marcin Kus was booked for hauling down Barry Robson.

A tight offside decision saw a delicate Boyd chip into the net chalked off but the Poles had become so dispirited by then that it hardly mattered.

SCOTLAND: Marshall (Combe 46); Neilson, Greer, Virgo (Berra 70), Hay (Wallace 62); Teale, Montgomery, McDonald (Miller 46), Robson (Kerr 62); Duffy (McAllister 46), Boyd.
