ONCE again it's time to start thinking of stocking up the booze cupboard for Christmas festivities.

It's far better to plan the range needed now than have a last minute frantic dash around the wine shop or supermarket.

For me the cupboard has to have a range of drinks and wine so guests have their chosen tipple or something close to it.

A small range of aperitifs, wine, and digestives, in other words sherry and vermouth, red white and sparkling wines, and a few spirits and liqueurs should keep most guests happy.

Beginning at the end one drink every range should include is a bottle of Penderyn Welsh Whisky.

It's certainly not just to be patriotic but the amber nectar distilled in the Brecon Beacons is regarded by aficionados of whisky as one of the best examples of this style of whisky.

It has just taken the top award in the 2013 Whisky Bible as European Whisky of the Year, by whisky expert Jim Murray.

Penderyn has a good story. The first single malt was produced in 2004 - the first Welsh whisky for over a century since the distillery at Frongoch, Bala, closed.

The malted barley come from Brains Brewery in Cardiff and the water from the Brecon Beacons adds purity. The still is totally revolutionary and produced a spirit second to none.

After three years, the minimum age for a malt it acquires a mellowness with rich fruit aromas and a freshness of summer berries and honey bringing a balance of rich and bitter nuances.

The quality is now recognised throughout the industry and it sits on restaurant and cocktail bar shelves alongside the most prestigious Scottish malt whiskies.

It is the perfect Christmas present for any whisky lover. Yet now whisky is one of the most fashionable spirits enjoyed by people of all ages. It can be taken neat, or cut with water.

Some prefer to add a sparkling water or a lightly flavoured fizzy drink such as ginger ale or lemonade.

Some of the top mixologists are using it as a base for the most renowned traditional and new cocktails.

However you like to take whisky Penderyn has a quality that stands above everyday spirit.

With close on a decade of production maturing in the distillery at Penderyn many different styles are coming onto the market, so there is plenty of choice for your own store and of those friends who enjoy true quality.
