THE second model Honda CR-V soft roader, built between 2001 and 2006, was the first available with a diesel engine and these are very much sought after and worth a good deal more than the petrol models.

Where this engine will average about 42 miles per gallon, the 2-litre petrol alternative still returns an acceptable 30 and is beautifully smooth and willing.

It's not a heavyweight off-roader because the all-independent suspension is designed for comfort and handling and definitely not for ground clearance.

That said, I have taken one over rough fields in the rain and found it surprisingly agile and able, with plenty of traction.

The front wheels take power to the road most of the time and the 4WD system is completely automatic, with added power to the rears when there is loss of traction.

Diesels are worth pounds 500-600 more than petrols, but offer similar performance with that extra economy.

Inside it is light and airy, with well placed switches and controls.

The tailgate has two-stage opening where the glass window can be lifted to put small items into the large boot.
