Maximus in Gladiator Early Life Russell Ira Crowe was born on April 7,
1964 in Wellington, New Zealand. Moved to Australia at the age of four.
The son of movie caterers, Crowe was exposed to the film industry at an
early age and made his professional debut at six on the Australian
kids' TV show Spyforce. Also appeared in The Young Doctors when 12,
but later took a number of odd jobs including stints as a fruit picker,
horse wrangler, bingo caller and singer before returning to acting.
Career A spell in musical theatre led to Crowe's first major
big-screen role in 1990 film The Crossing, followed by Proof, for which
he won an Australian Film Institute Award. A second gong came for
controversial Romper Stomper, prompting Sharon Stone to headhunt him for
The Quick And The Dead in 1995. Other major movies include Gladiator,
for which he won the 2001 Best Actor award at the Oscars, Master and
Commander The Far Side of the World, 3.10 to Yuma, American Gangste,
while forthcoming movie Robin Hood is expected to be massive. Love Life
Had a very public affair with Meg Ryan on the set of Proof Of Life in
