Pruta 17-piece food storage set

This is definitely the bargain of the week. For less than three quid you get 17 separate plastic containers ranging in size from 9x9x4cm for tiny morsels to 23x16x8cm for family meals. They are microwave-safe for thawing and warming food, can be used to store food in the freezer and you can even bung them in the dishwasher.

Argos three-piece glass storage set

If you are planning on having your storage jars on display, these are the ones to get. They come in different sizes and are ideal for pasta or rice. The rubber seal makes the lids airtight, but don't put them in the dishwasher - handwash only is recommended. A little on the pricey side but should last a lifetime.

Half of One

Like to cook and use half a lemon or lime in your recipes? This clever wee storage box will keep the other half of the fruit fresh until you want to use it. It is airtight and will either lie flat in the fridge, or hang from one of the shelves if you want to save space. The days of throwing away shrivelled up lemons from the back of the fridge are over.

Banana Bag

I love bananas but I'm the only one who eats them at home and I can't get through a whole bag before they are over-ripe. The banana bag is the answer. This ingenius sack is partially insulated. You bung the fruit in the bag, pull the drawstring, and keep the bag in the fridge. I was sceptical but it really does work. My bananas were still fresh a week and a half after buying. Very clever.

Lock & Lock airtight containers

Lock & Lock originally came up with the four-flap close system for ultimate food freshness. The rubber seal inside makes them 100 per cent airtight, so they are ideal for taking your sandwiches to work or for storing a frozen chilli then heating it up in the microwave. More than 70 different sizes are available and they are sturdy enough to last for years on end. A good investment.
