stargazing with Steve Reid.

Byline: Steve Reid

THE moon will be at last quarter tonight and does not rise until after 11pm, so this should give you a chance to look at two different types of objects within Ursa Major. The first is the spiral galaxy M108 that can be found at RA11 11 41 Dec + 53 38 46 under the plough east of the star Merak.

The galaxy looks more like an irregular and is similar to M82 but not as bright. I found M 108 by accident while looking for our next target,M97 the Owl nebula.

The owl is a strange looking planetary nebular and can be found at Dec 11 14 59 Dec + 54 59 47 slightly further north close to the star BSC 4344.

It looks,as you would expect, like two dark patches that make up its eyes and a bright central white dwarf star to serve as a beak.

Saturn will all ready have risen at just after 10pm and can be seen in the constellation of Gemini. The planet is bright and can be seen easily, even when the moon is close by.

If you look closely before our moon rises you will be able to see Saturn's largest satellite Titan, directly north of the planet.

The Llandrillo AS will be holding a group observation of the Orionids Meteor shower this Monday night to be led by Martin Rice.

This is an annual meteor shower, with a multiple radiant, whichlies at the border of Orion and Gemini, near the star (gGem).

The shower occurs between October 16t & 27. Meteoroids that have come from the trail left by Halley's Comet produce this display.
