Image: Tough-guy actor Best known for: The Shield Early life: Born August 30, 1963, in Lowell, Massachusetts. His family are originally from Greece. Chiklis wanted to act from the age of five, and at 13 made his professional debut at the Town And Country Playhouse in Salem, New Hampshire. At high school he enjoyed sports and starred in amateur productions before studying acting at Boston University's School for the Arts. Career: Despite landing various roles off-Broadway, Chiklis spent most of the next three years out of work. He was surprised when he was offered the part of John Belushi in biopic Wired, beating 200 other actors. Unfortunately, it didn't lead to huge success. Instead, he had small parts in Miami Vice, LA Law, and Murphy Brown before landing the lead in The Commish, which lasted four years. Since then, Chiklis has featured in sitcom Daddio and starred in movies such as Nixon and Soldier. His biggest hits to date have been The Shield and The Fantastic Four.

Love life: Married Michelle Moran in 1992. They have two daughters, 17-year-old Autumn and Odessa, 12. spotlight on... Michael Chiklis Don't mention: His years struggling to make a name for himself. Quote: "A bricklayer lays bricks. I'm an actor, that's what I do."
