seller with Brian Elliott of the best from the high street 3; Wine.
2014 Trebuchet Red (PS5.99 instead of PS7.99 until March 14 at Majestic)
This is a blend of malbec and both main cabernet grapes (sauvignon and franc) from a Western Cape winery that proudly exhibits a novelty siege engine (trebuchet). The wine itself is centred around soft bramble fruit with firm acidity and a meaty - and pleasingly earthy - depth.
2015 Finest* South African Shiraz (PS5.50 at Tesco)
After last week's focus on Italy, today's selections are from South Africa, where the rising star is shiraz - especially versions from Swartland. This medium-bodied example from that region is part of Tesco's "everyday low prices" initiative (that replaces "half-price offers"). The wine wraps a creamy texture, fresh acidity and well-judged tannin around its supple mint and nutmeg-influenced red cherry and bramble fruit.
star STAR BUY Buy 2015 Fairtrade South African Chenin Blanc (PS4.99 instead of PS6.39 until March 15 - at Waitrose)
Chenin blanc is a versatile grape with potential sweetness levels up to off-dry and beyond. This, though, is crisp white wine with lemon-based acidity and a smooth, floral depth to support its red apple, ripe melon and banana fruit and the suggestion of all-spice that accompanies it.
